The High Priestess

The High Priestess, numbered II, is the guardian of the subconscious mind and the keeper of sacred, hidden knowledge. She represents intuition, mystery, and the divine feminine. Seated between two pillars, often marked B (Boaz, meaning strength) and J (Jachin, meaning “He will establish”), which represent duality and the entrance to a sacred temple or deeper understanding.

The veil behind her, decorated with pomegranates (symbolizing fertility, abundance, and the subconscious) and palm trees (symbolizing masculine anointing and victory), conceals profound secrets that are only accessible through inner exploration and intuition. She holds a scroll or Torah, signifying sacred texts and esoteric wisdom, often partially hidden to imply that some knowledge is unwritten or only revealed to initiates.

The crescent moon at her feet connects her to lunar cycles, emotions, and intuitive powers. Upright, The High Priestess calls for introspection, trusting your intuition, and looking beyond the obvious. She suggests that answers lie within and encourages a passive, receptive approach to understanding. Reversed, she can indicate a disconnect from intuition, secrets being kept or revealed inappropriately, superficiality, or a denial of one’s inner voice. It might also point to hidden agendas or a need to pay more attention to dreams and intuitive nudges.
